What is Connecticut’s Move Over Law?

All Connecticut motorists (and even those who are just passing through) have traveled along the road and have seen emergency vehicles helping others. But did you know that it is mandatory that you move over?

On October 1, 2009 the law went into effect and requires the following:

1. Driver to slow down to a reasonable speed when emergency vehicles are in the shoulder,or breakdown lane and then move over to another lane if it is safe to do so.
2. Emergency vehicles must have their lights on including police cars, fire trucks, maintenance vehicles, ambulances or other EMS vehicles, and wrecker/tow trucks.

Not only does this law keep you safe as the motorist, but it keeps police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, and tow truck drivers from workers’ compensation injuries and claims.
