Top Sentinel Events of 2017

A new Sentinel Event entered the top 10 events for 2017. The Joint Commission, a not-for-profit organization that accredits healthcare facilities, issued its list of top Sentinel Events for 2017. Sentinel Events are those that result in patient death, significant permanent injury, or significant temporary harm where life must be sustained. The top ten events of 2017 were:
- Unintended retention of a foreign body
- Falls
- Wrong patient, wrong site, wrong procedure
- Suicide
- Delays in treatment
- Other unanticipated events
- Criminal events
- Medication errors
- Operative/postoperative complication
- Self-inflicted injury
