There are a wide array of things that can put you in an unsafe position when you’re driving a car, but there aren’t many as dangerous as driving while drowsy.  Drowsy driving can lead to a Connecticut auto accident quickly and abruptly.  That’s why it is important for you to know the signs that you might be drowsy.

When you get behind the wheel there should be no distractions and no physical impairments that get in your way of driving safely.  It is very easy to understand that you should not get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking or smoking marijuana.  It is equally easy to understand that looking at your cell phone or changing the radio station can be detrimental to your ability to operate the vehicle safely.  However, the line is hard to recognize when you are tired whether or not you should be behind the wheel.

If you’re questioning yourself, a good rule of thumb is to wait until you’re fresh and can be alert behind the wheel.  That being said, you’ll also want to pay careful attention to these signs that are key indicators that you are drowsy while behind the wheel.

  1. Blinking or yawning frequently.  If you are driving and you find yourself yawning or rubbing your eyes to keep them from blinking, you are likely driving while drowsy.
  2. Drifting out of your lane is a sign that you are driving while drowsy.  If you veer out of your lane and cross the rumble strips or are abruptly awoken by a horn from another vehicle traveling in the lane next to you, you are likely driving drowsy.
  3. If you can’t remember the last couple of miles of your trip this can be very dangerous and you should immediately pull over.

Any sign of being drowsy while you’re driving should indicate to you that you need to pull off the road and take a break from driving.  You should find a safe place to pull off the road and take a brief nap until you’re not feeling the effects of being drowsy.

While some drivers may use coffee or other caffeinated beverages to keep themselves awake this can be a dangerous game and could very well lead to a Connecticut auto accident.  The best cure for driving while drowsy is to get some rest.  It may not be convenient, but it may save your life.
