Connecticut Medical Malpractice: Nearly 70% Of Blood Clots Due To Hospitalizations Can Be Prevented

In this country there are as many as 900,000 blood clots reported each year. Of those blood clots that are reported nearly half are due to a recent stay at a hospital. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) refers to these types of blood clots as Healthcare-Associated Venous Thromboembolism (HA-VTE) and reports that these types of blood clots result in nearly 100,000 preventable deaths each year.

Developing a blood clot could lead to death and if the medical professionals who were treating you deviated from the standard of care, it may be considered Connecticut medical malpractice.

The two groups that are most susceptible to HA-VTE are those that have been hospitalized for surgery and those who have been receiving cancer treatments. According to the CDC many of those who are discharged from the hospital and diagnosed with VTE could avoid death if certain procedures were being implemented in healthcare settings throughout the country, In many cases, these procedures are not being followed.

The CDC is working to improve outcomes and guide healthcare facilities to take a proactive approach to stemming this tide of preventable deaths from HA-VTE. The following recommendations have been made to hospitals:

  1. Strengthen healthcare monitoring of HA-VTE
  2. Identify and promote best practices for preventing HA-VTE
  3. Increase education and awareness of HA-VTE

These three main objectives are being carried out by the CDC in a variety of ways that you can read about here.
