Connecticut Medical Malpractice: Busy Surgeons Put Patients At Risk
Connecticut medical malpractice occurs when there is a deviation from the standard of care. That deviation can occur during a surgical procedure when a surgeon acts in error, ordering the wrong medication, or fails to order proper post-surgical care.
A recent study released by a medical malpractice insurer shows that overtired and overworked doctors will make mistakes. Nationwide, over 48 million inpatient surgeries and nearly 36 million outpatient surgeries are performed each year. The study cites preparation errors, poor performance, and poor judgement. Americans undergo an average of nine surgical procedures in their lifetime.
This report analyzed medical malpractice claims from 2014-2018. There were some interesting findings.
- The top areas for medical malpractice claims were neurosurgery, general surgery, and orthopaedic surgery. These three areas made up 50% of the claims.
- Of claims that closed over this period of time, 29% were considered to be “significant, permanent injuries” while 9% of those resulted in death.
