April Is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Here’s How To Raise Awareness
As we’ve covered many times before on this blog, distracted driving is one of the main things that leads to Connecticut auto accidents. Whether you’re picking up your phone to make a quick phone call or reaching down to change the dial on the radio, there are so many things that you can do while driving that will take your eyes off the road and leave you vulnerable.
The month of April has been set aside as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month to help folks become more attuned to what distracted driving is and how to avoid distractions. As a friend or family member you can help spread the word about this incredibly important topic to your community. Here’s how;
- Know what constitutes distracted driving. Anything that takes your eyes off the road in front of you can be distracting. Having a pet in the car or eating a snack, changing the volume on the radio or talking on your phone, and many other things can be considered distracted driving.
- Spread the word. Do a post on your social networks. Talk about it with your group of friends. Send an email to your family. Make sure everyone you know is aware of the dangers of distracted driving.
- Make a plan to avoid distracted driving yourself. Where will you stow your cell phone while driving? When will you eat so you can avoid eating and driving? If you have to take your pet with you on the road, what is your plan to keep her/him safely strapped in? Making a plan needs to include all of the possible distractions that could arise while you’re driving.
- Slow down. Pull over. If you must do something that is considered distracted driving, pull over to the side of the road and do it.
