When Bicyclists Are Victims Of A Hit-and-Run

Bicyclists enjoy the same rights and responsibilities of vehicles that travel on Connecticut roadways. When a negligent driver forces a bike off the road, slams into it, or opens a door into one, and then leaves the scene, this driver is negligent and can be held responsible for the injuries sustained by the cyclists.

These types of accidents are all too common. After a Connecticut bike accident, a cyclist can, and should, take steps to protect their best interests. If you were involved in a bike accident where the driver fled the scene, follow these steps.

  1. Document the scene. Have pictures taken of weather conditions, your injuries, your bike, and the accident scene itself.
  2. Call the police. Filing an accident report with local law enforcement gets your accident on record, a critical step in protecting your rights.
  3. Accept medical help. If the officer who responds to the scene offers to call a medical technician, accept the medical help. Getting your injuries recorded is another critical step. Sometimes, it can take days or weeks for injuries to fully present themselves in the body. Getting your accident documented can help protect you in the future.
  4. Contact an experienced attorney. Often times with hit-and-run accidents, the victim is not able to file a claim against the insurance of the driver who hit them. You can, however, file a claim with your own insurance. This is often a very tricky set of circumstances for accident victims to navigate on their own when also trying to recover and get back to their life.

Connecticut drivers who hit a pedestrian or cyclist with their vehicle are required by law to stop, stay at the scene, provide aid if necessary, and call police.
