Connecticut Auto Accidents: Rear-Facing Car Seats Are Safest

A recent study has shown that children in rear-facing car seats are safe in rear-end collisions. Much of the research on rear-facing car seats has focused on side-impact or head-on collisions.
Children are less likely to die in rear-end collisions, but concerns are still present as to how the crash may impact their health. Concerns arise on how the child’s head impacts the back of the carseat. The study found that car seat protects the child dummy’s head, neck, and spine.
Connecticut car seat law is the following:
- Infants should be rear-facing until they are age 2 AND weight 30 lbs.
- Children should remain in a 5-point harness until they are 5 years old AND weigh 40 lbs.
- Children must use a booster seat until they are 8 years old AND weigh 60 lbs.
- Once a child is out of a booster seat, they must wear a regular seat belt while riding in a vehicle.
