Connecticut Medical Malpractice: 2.8% of Postoperative Complications End In Death

After a patient undergoes a surgical procedure postoperative complications can occur. A study published in the British Journal of Anesthesia last fall reported that there were 50 million postsurgical complications worldwide. Of those complications, 2.8% (1.5 million) of complications resulted in death before the patient left the hospital.

It is important to note that not all complications are the result of medical malpractice. There are, however, some postoperative complications that could be considered Connecticut medical malpractice. The following could be considered malpractice if a significant injury, including death, resulted:

• Mismanagement of medications
• Foreign objects like surgical tools and towels left inside the patient
• Operating on the wrong body part or patient
