CNA Medical Malpractice: Keeping Patients Safe During a Seizure
Physicians, surgeons and nurses are not the only healthcare professionals who can commit Connecticut medical malpractice. Medical malpractice is the deviation from the standard of care that causes the patient significant permanent injury, including death.
Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) can commit medical malpractice when they do not follow patient care protocols. CNAs care for patients in a healthcare facility as well as at the patient’s home. Seizures are a medical event that CNAs often witness and are involved in keeping the patient safe.
A recent article offers these suggestions for CNAs treating patients who have a seizure:
– Move the patient to his/her side so they do not choke on any fluids or vomit. This also prevents the patient’s tongue from blocking their airway.
– Loosen clothing from around the neck so the airway is not constricted.
– Do not try to stop the patient from moving, unless they are in danger.
– Do not give any medication orally.
– Remove any objects that might harm the patient.
