Doctors and other healthcare professionals are people in whom we place a great deal of blind trust. Several recent studies have revealed some surprising facts about hospitals.
- Up to 440,000 people die each year from hospital errors. In fact, this puts hospital errors as the third leading cause of death in the United States behind heart disease and cancer.
- Estimated 722,000 people will get a hospital acquired infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). And of that, about 10% will die from their infection.
- Harvard Medical School reports more errors occur in critical care units. Errors occur in “slips and lapses” as opposed to lack of knowledge.
