24% of Older Adults Report Falling With Injuries

Connecticut slip and fall injuries are common, especially among older adults. In fact 28.7% of adults over the age of 65 reported falling in 2014. Of those 29 million falls, 7 million, or 24%, resulted in injuries. For older adults, a slip and fall injury could have long lasting effects including broken bones, soft tissue injuries that result in reduced range of motion, and traumatic brain injuries.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study also found the following statistics:
- Men are less likely than women to report falls to their doctor.
- Women fall more due to a decrease in muscle mass as they age.
- Risk factors associated with falling, like prescription medications, changes in gait/balance, decrease in activity, and more severe conditions, increase with age.
