Five Statistics About Auto Accidents That Might Surprise You
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) keeps a close eye on auto accident statistics to help inform the national conversation on safety on our roads. In the most recent statistics released recently the news is predominantly good.
The headline number is that there was a decline in auto accident deaths in 2018. The number went down by nearly 1,000 deaths over the course of the year. This is the second year in a row that the NHTSA has reported a decrease in deaths on our nation’s roads.
As you dig deeper into the numbers you’ll find that there were some bright spots and just a few increases in the numbers.
- In children 14 years or younger there was a 10% decline in auto accident deaths,
- Pedestrian deaths increased by 3% to the highest number since 1990,
- Motorcycle accident deaths were down nearly 5%,
- Cyclists fatalities increased nearly 6% more often,
- Speeding related deaths declined by 6%.
These numbers tell a mixed story, but one that is showing that public education works. Educating drivers on speeding for instance has shown a marked improvement in those numbers to date.
